Abstract Photography at Home

October 10, 2023

I recently updated my abstract photography page of my portfolio and I was thinking about wanting to do more abstract photography.

I first was introduced to it in an intro to photography course in college, when we had one week to take 100 abstract photos using just our phones in our homes. The project really forced us to start seeing things in new ways and play around with things.

I wanted to take another crack at it. The other night, I took a flashlight and went into our craft room. I was really taken by this storage bin covered in reversible sequins. I also played around with shadows and really just trying to find the weirdest stuff I could and seeing how the light would affect it and how I could make it harder to tell what the picture really showed, without it just being out of focus! That's the hardest thing about cellphone macro photography, and I really like macros for abstraction.

We also have this really cool light that's got tons of fiberglass strings on it. It's kind of like a light up, color-changing pom pom. I moved it around as I took photos and some of them were pretty cool. As I was doing the same thing I did in that assignment that got me into abstract photography, I was using just my phone and couldn't take long exposures, but I will definitely will go back with my camera soon.

Going back to this project was a really fun and easy way to think about abstract photography. If you haven't tried this yourself, I really recommend it!

I tried to focus on light and color for this batch. I want to do some more coming up that focus on texture. I also want to do more with movement and other manipulations. So keep your eyes peeled, I've got more abstract photography coming! For now, you can check out my abstract page to tide yourself over 😉
